MFLINKS has been developed with Professor Russ Wermers (University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business) as a contributor and ongoing consultant to the project. A good example of how MFLINKS can be used is his article, “Mutual Fund Performance: An Empirical Decomposition into Stock-Picking Talent, Style, Transactions Costs, and Expenses” (Journal of Finance, 2000) that decomposes mutual fund performance into its various components based upon actual holdings.
Note: The CRSP Mutual Fund database has been re-engineered to incorporate new data sources, primarily Lipper. As described here, all current Morningstar-based Mutual Fund data, including the ICDI identifier, was deleted on Monday April 21st. Per this announcement, the ICDI column has been replaced with a new identifier, CRSP_Fundno, in the MFLINK1 dataset. A subset of the funds that were in the MFLINKS1 dataset have not yet been assigned CRSP_Fundno identifiers by CRSP. These funds have no value in the CRSP_Fundno column. These funds have also been listed separately in the MFL_Exceptions dataset.
